MP for Kaashidhoo constituency, Abdulla Jabir, has called for public executions of child sex offenders and has requested an emergency parliament session to amend legislation accordingly.

The Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) publicized a letter by the party's leader and business tycoon, Abdulla Jabir, to Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed via Twitter on Tuesday.

The letter states that despite the fact that the Maldives is a 100% Muslim country, and while citizens are expected to uphold the discipline mandated in Islam, child sex abuse cases have become increasingly common in Maldivian society. Moreover, the letter highlights that courts often release child sex offenders due to lack of evidence, or even if convicted, release them back into society after a short period of detention, allowing them to continue perpetuating their crimes with impunity.

Jabir's letter further called on the parliament, the state and the relevant authorities to take immediate steps to bring a stop to child sex abuse cases.

As such, he appealed for the support from all members of the parliament to amend criminal laws against child sex offenders, sentencing them to public executions as a deterrent against child sex abuse. Hence, he requested an emergency parliament session as soon as possible in order to debate the motion.
