Voting began on Friday afternoon at 02:00 pm and is scheduled to close at 06:00 pm

Voting has begun in Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) internal elections for the parties leadership positions.

Voting began on Friday afternoon at 02:00 pm and is scheduled to close at 06:00 pm.

According to MDP, a total of 87439 (eighty-seven thousand four hundred and thirty nine) people registered to vote in the party's internal elections.

Voting ballot boxes are located at Iskandhar School with the exception of Addu City and Fuvahmulah City which are located in MDP's headquarters or "Haru Ge". Ballot boxes have also been placed in the MDP campaign hall of every island, in addition to a ballot box in Colombo, Sri Lanka for MDP members abroad.

As such, boxes for 87 districts have been placed in 185 locations, including:

-Hulhumale' : Ghaazee School

- Vilimale': Vilimale' MDP campaign hall

-Colombo, Sri Lanka : Herriot Watt Academy, No. 244/88 Hill Street, Dehiwala

The position of the party's president is being contested by Former president and the party's current leader, Mohamed Nasheed whereas the position of Vice-President is being contested by the current Vice-President, Minister at the President’s Office, Mohamed Shifaz (Shippe) and MP for North Hithadhoo constituency, Mohamed Aslam.

The campaign for these elections have been ongoing for the past few days.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is the first and largest political party founded at the Maldives, established on 23 June 2005.
