Customs seize 1.6kg of drugs

Maldives Customs Service (MCS) has seized 1.6 kg of drugs from Velana International Airport.

According to the press release by MCS, two men attempting to smuggle drugs into the country by ingesting it and using the body as a container were arrested at the airport after arrival.

The smugglers include a 42 year-old Brazilian man apprehended with substances weighing 837.2 grams, including the packing, on October 6th.

The second smuggler was identified as a 29 year-old Brazilian man arrested on October 25th with 765.5 grams of substances, including the packing.

Both men were searched under the suspicion of carrying drugs when authorities discovered drugs hidden inside their bodies.

The substances tested positive for cocaine.

Moreover, the statement declares that the substances, weighing a total of 1.6 kg, is worth up to MVR 5.6 million on the black market.

The suspects and the substances have been handed over to the Maldives Police Service, according to the statement.
