RaajjeMV has learnt that the investigative report on the murder of the former MP for Ungoofaaru constituency, Dr. Afrasheem Ali, has shows no evidence of political motivation behind the murder.
The Ungoofaaru constituency MP was stabbed to death in the stairwell of his house near STELCO in the capital city, in October 2012.
The investigative report was forwarded by the Presidential Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances to the President's Office on November 7, with by the President's Office forwarding the investigative report to the relevant authorities on Thursday.
According to the report, the attack on Dr. Afrasheem was organized by Azlif Rauf. He was instructed to carry out the murder by a group over religious differences with the lawmaker.
Two were charged over Dr. Afrasheem's murder, but only Hussain Humaam was convicted and sentenced to death after a dubious trial.
Other than Humam, all the suspects arrested in connection to the murder were set free. The list of suspects included, political activist for the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ali "Sato" Shan.
Shan is accused of having involvement in the murder in the commission's investigative report.
The report states that Dr. Afrasheem's murder was motivated by religious differences and that there is no evidence of any political motives behind it.
