Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has procured new equipment worth MVR 30 million for its operations.
While a total of seven equipment were brought in, two are barge handlers and five terminal tractors.
While speaking to the press, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MPL, Shahid Ali, divulged that most of their equipment is old and broken and that these equipment are "critical" and essential for MPL's operations.
The barge handler and terminal tractors have been in use since Thursday.
According to Shahid, the barge handlers are mainly used to transfer containers from one place to another for long distances, whereas terminal tractors are specialized for handling containers.
Shahid further stated that MPL staff are have become very familiar with the Kalmar brand of equipment over the past ten tears, hence, the new equipment will only make operations easier.

Including the two new barge handlers, MPL now has a total of four barge handlers to use in their operations.
