The Malé City Council has opened a new parking zone in Sosun Magu, with a capacity of over 200 motorcycles.

Council member Ahmed Zameer told RaajjeMV that the new parking zone, located in the plot of land that held a nursery previously, can accommodate up to 279 motorcycles at once and the council aims to reduce congestion on the capital’s streets in line with the progression of the public transport in the city.

The new parking zone is expected to ease traffic where Majeedhee Magu and Sosun Magu meets, said Zameer.

Further, he added that the government is currently in discussions with the relevant authorities to construct parking buildings in order to permanently resolve the mounting issue of traffic congestion in Malé.

The council inspires to commence and conclude the project soon, said Zameer, who added that administrative work has begun for it.

While the government has established parking zones across several regions of the capital thus far, a lot of work is being exerted by the council to ensure traffic load is eased. Once the public transport in Malé is enhanced, the government plans to introduce minibus services as well.

Parking zones have been established in nine regions of the capital thus far.

In May, the council announced plans to vacate all parking zones once new zones are established.
