The attorney general has forwarded the Transitional Justice Bill to the President's Office.

The bill seeks to investigate acts of corruption and systematic violation of human rights that occurred between January 1st, 2012 and 17th November 2018 and create regulations that will bring justice to the victims of those acts.

In a press statement released on Tuesday afternoon, the Attorney General’s office disclosed that the bill has been forwarded to the president's office.

The legislation proposes to establish an Ombudsman office to carry out the following seven objectives:

  1. Investigate acts of senior officials in state institutions that may have violated a human right as well as the institution which carried out these acts
  2. Identify the reasons behind systematic violation of human rights, and their type and extent
  3. Holding the chief official or institution in charge of said systematic violation of human rights legally accountable
  4. Forward the criminal offenses found through the Ombudsman office investigative report to the Prosecutor Generals office and the civil cases to the Attorney General’s office.
  5. Identify, compensate and provide aid to the those victimized by the systematic violation of human rights
  6. Revise the regulations of institutions involved in the systematic violation of human rights
  7. Identifying the resolutions that can prevent further systematic violation of human rights in the future

The legislation will be approved after the president's office presents the bill to the parliament, who will then debate and vote on the bill after further review.
