Minister Shahid is accompanying President Solih on his official visit to Japan

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and Japanese counterpart Motegi Toshimitsu have discussed on ways to further expand the cooperation between the two countries.

Shahid traveled to Tokyo, Japan to accompany President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, after concluding an official visit to Thailand.

During the meeting, Minster Shahid congratulated Motegi who was recently appointed as the Japanese foreign minister.

Both parties also discussed on further expanding the cooperation between the two countries in areas relating to economic and social development of Maldives, with Minister Shahid expressing appreciation for Japan’s continued support to the Maldives throughout its development journey.

In addition to economic cooperation, both Ministers also discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest including maritime cooperation.

The foreign minister also expressed sympathies to the Government and the people of Japan, on the devastation and loss of lives caused due to the Typhoon Hagibis and reaffirmed strong support of the Government and the people of the Maldives at this difficult time.

President Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed traveled to Japan on Saturday, to attend the Enthronement Ceremony of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan. They will conclude the visit on October 27.

President Solih and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held bilateral talks earlier on Monday.
