Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has met with his counterpart in Thailand, Don Pramudwinai.

The meeting was held on Wednesday morning, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.

At the meeting, both ministers discussed the various aspects of the bilateral relations between the two countries, and noted the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two countries for mutually beneficial development goals.

Minister Shahid also expressed gratitude for the Thailand government’s recent decision to include Maldives in the Thai Visa Exemption Scheme for tourists.

He further highlighted the need for both countries to enter into a comprehensive visa waiver agreement “to ease travel between the countries,” stressing that it would “promote medical tourism to Thailand and assist the Maldivians that travel to Thailand for medical purposes.”

The minister also discussed improving air connectivity between both countries “as it would bolster the tourism industry noting that Bangkok Airways plans to increase flights to Male’ to two a day starting next year.”

While this June marked 40 years since the establishment on diplomatic ties between Maldives and Thailand, Minister Shahid conveyed greetings to Minister Pramudwinai.

The Thai minister also held a special luncheon in honour of Minister Shahid and delegation, on Wednesday.

Earlier on Wednesday, the foreign minister officially opened the Maldives Embassy in Thailand. He is in the south-eastern nation on a three-day official visit, and will conclude the trip on Thursday.
