This is Shahid’s first visit to China since assuming office

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has arrived in Beijing on his first official visit to China.

The official visit comes upon the invitation from State Councillor and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China.

Minister Shahid is set to pay a courtesy call on China's Vice President alongside holding bilateral discussions with his counterpart.

Both ministers are scheduled to review the scale of bilateral relations that have long existed between both countries as discuss ways to further strengthen the historic ties that Maldives and China have enjoyed over many years.

Following his arrival, Minister Shahid tweeted his keenness to hold fruitful discussions to accelerate the relationship between Maldives and China, for the benefit of the people of both countries.

The ministry revealed that China is an “important” development partner of Maldives and the government has reiterated its “firm and unwavering commitment” to uphold the long-standing “One Chine Policy” and appreciate its support as a partner in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Minister Shahid is also scheduled to meet the Vice President and Chief Investment Officer of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) as well as the President of BUCG International, Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG).

The Maldives delegation, led by Minister Shahid consists of Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel, Multilateral Secretary Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, Director of Communications Miuvaan Mohamed and Assistant Director Maryam Bassama Farooq.
